Skyline Guest Ranch prides itself on offering fishing trips in the Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone National Park for over 40 years. No matter your experience level, we look forward to the opportunity of helping you experience the joy and resolution that comes with fishing in the Rocky Mountains!

Fly-Fishing in Yellowstone National Park

Spend the day horseback riding into the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park to fly-fish world-renown streams for native cutthroat trout. This unique opportunity to fly-fish the interior of Yellowstone, being fully immersed in this Rocky Mountain paradise is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Our close proximity to the Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone allows us quick access to the best fishing the park has to offer. Fly-fishing trips are full-day experiences that are entirely customizable; location and duration are flexible to accommodate anyone who wants the experience. 

 

If you are not a fisherman, no worries! We love teaching people how to fly fish. Our highly skilled and trained guides are amazing at working with children and novice fishermen and love the opportunity to help someone catch their first fish. Gear and equipment is provided. 

Lake Fishing in the Beartooth Mountains

Venture into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, fishing beautiful alpine lakes, and be fully immersed in this Rocky Mountain paradise. This full-day experience is entirely customizable; location and duration are flexible to accommodate anyone who wants to experience the true beauty of Montana. The Beartooth Mountains are absolutely spectacular, their beauty and majesty is unmatched! 

Sample Itinerary 
 

Clients can pick from our full selection of fishing locations or leave the decision up to the guide. Fishing locations include Pebble Creek, Cache Creek, Slough Creek, Hellroaring Creek, and the Yellowstone River. Locations do vary regarding riding length, difficulty, fishing technicality, and seasonality.

 

Begin the day by meeting your guide at the previously agreed upon trailhead between 7:30-8:30 am. Usually, with our large horse trailer, we are easy to spot! After a short informational, we will back up your gear, lunches, and drinks and saddle up. Most locations include a 1.5-2.5 hour ride to the river. Spend the day fishing and exploring the stream. Then, enjoy a peaceful ride back to the trailhead. (Please note: this itinerary is an example, adjustments can be made to accommodate each individual group and their needs.)

Lunch and drinks are provided. Gluten-free and vegetarian lunches can be provided upon request. 

 

 

Frequently Asked Questions


What does a day trip consist of?
We generally meet you at the designated trailhead by 8 a.m., ride by horseback for 1–2 hours, away from the crowds and into the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park. We fish throughout the day, enjoy a hearty sack lunch, soft drinks, and bottled water, and return in the evening to get back to the trailhead by about 7 p.m. A great day!

What should I bring on a fly fishing adventure in Yellowstone?
Along with your fishing gear, Be sure to bring a rain jacket, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent. A hat and/or sunglasses will be valuable. You should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots and long pants for the horse ride. You may change into shorts and sandals at the stream if you like.

What does Skyline Guest Ranch provide?
We provide your horse and a guide for your group. (Two guides if there are more than 5 in the group.) Also, we provide a hearty sack lunch (usually consisting of a meat and cheese sandwich, homemade cookies, fresh fruit, chips, candy, nuts, or jerky), soft drinks, and bottled water.

What if I've never ridden a horse?
No worries! Our horses know their job and do it well. With just a few simple instructions, you will be feeling in control and able to enjoy your ride.

What if I've never fly-fished?
Then it's a great time to learn this exciting yet relaxing skill! Your guide can help you get the basics, give you time to practice, give you pointers to improve, and help you enjoy your new experience.

Where do I get a Yellowstone fishing license and how much does it cost?
You are required to purchase your license before your trip. They can be purchased online by visiting the Yellowstone National Park website. Click here to purchase a license. 

Is there an age limit to riding horses or going fishing?
Children need to be big enough and brave enough to ride in their saddle on their horse. Most 8-year-olds are more than ready to ride. Trips are fully customizable. The duration and rigor of the excursion can be changed to accommodate children and families.
